Pinewood Awarded Green School Designation

The Maryland Green School Award Program recognizes and celebrates Maryland schools that use the school site and the community to prepare students to understand and act on current and future environmental challenges. The program uses the environment as a framework for integrating math, science, reading, writing, social studies and the arts as part of the regular curriculum. Students must implement environmentally sound projects of their own design on their school grounds and within their community.

Recycling at Pinewood

We now have a recycling bin here at Pinewood that will recycle paper, newspaper, books, magazines, and phone books. It will not take cardboard due to its bulkiness and light weight. We will get a stipend for the weight of each load they pick up that we will use to support our "Green School" activities. Please spread the word throughout your community to help us make our monthly quota.

The recycling bin may be found near the entrance to the gym/cafe next to the dumpster.

Women's Group

The Women's Group is a group of women who get together monthly for a little socialization and relaxation. We meet at a member's house or another location where we have a small, informal meeting and then fun! We try to mix it up a little bit each year and add new ideas such as a monthly speaker, painting pottery, Ladies night at a local salon. Whatever the event - there's always an informal atmosphere of good food, and fun friends getting together to laugh and relax! Our group is a great outlet for meeting other neighbors, moms with children the same age so walks around the block and trips to the playground are more enjoyable!

Throughout the year we hold several activities for families as well as "just adults". We have an Egg Hunt, Women-Only Pool Party, Couples-Only Summer Gathering, Family Picnic, Scarecrow-Stuffing Party and a Women-Only Holiday "Gift" Exchange. We all participate in the Fourth of July Bike Parade and the Halloween Costume Parade (in conjunction with the Community Association).

Our annual dues are $1.00/month. We use our treasury money to purchase paper goods, beverages and craft supplies for some of our events. We frequently have a needy family or charitable organization that we will concentrate our efforts on during the course of the year.

We are a source of support and encouragement for each other whether it is emotional or physical. When a member has a baby, loses a loved one, or becomes incapacitated due to surgery or illness we bring meals according to the family's need for about two weeks.

We would love to have you attend our next event! Please contact us at the email address below if you're interested.

This February, some of the gals from the Women’s Group (looking beautiful in their scarves!) got together to make meals to ease the burden of their busy schedules. Between working, carpool and sports, sometimes it’s hard to plan - much less cook - dinner. Supper Thyme provided the perfect outlet for organized, simple meals that were easy and quick to prepare! While doing a lot of chatting and a little cooking, we nibbled on complimentary Molten Chocolate Cake and Spicy Shrimp with Goat Cheese - mmmm! There was a Prize Wheel with chances to win a free meal, appetizer or dessert so several of the girls went home with loaded bags of goodies for their families. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable way to cook dinner!

The day might have been overcast but there were many bright and sunny faces at the annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 6th. This year, Joe and Kathy Franz opened up their home for the Women’s Group event. Kathy and Joe have just finished some beautiful renovations on their home. A BIG thanks goes out to them for hosting the party and for leading the decorator house tours! (It is always interesting to see how alike on the outside... yet unique on the inside our houses can become.)

There was the usual "controlled chaos" as the excited kids scrambled for their hidden treats. After the hunt, the children played in the back yard and snuck little bits of candy while the moms and dads caught up with each other and enjoyed the delicious pot luck meal. It was another great event!

We will be having our annual couple’s party in August which is a great way to get acquainted with your neighbors if you are new to Pine Valley/Valleywood!
